My old man and two of his friends will be doing a driving holiday up the Mississippi with barely any itinerary, and want two American ponies to take on their travels.

Kinja'd!!!

I was thinking Ecoboost Mustang and a V8 Camaro SS, two American built legends with a bit of engine variety to stop the driving becoming stale.

Because their itinerary is mostly unknown and they will most likely be leaving the cars at a destination up the river, a major car hire company with multiple depots would probably be best. Are there any car hire companies you could recommend that would be able to supply both of these cars (or please recommend any other vehicles that would be a bit of fun for three 60+ Brits who like a bit of speed and a slice of American pie) and would allow drop-off at another location?

Challenger would also be good, especially for such a long drive. It’s a great GT car.

I rented a Challenger Scat-Pack from Budget. Definitely worth considering, it’s a great tourer and a hell of an engine.

Most national rental car companies will allow drop off at different locations. Now as for the car selection, Hertz is first that comes to mind, and I've used Enterprise in the past with success. Most of them should have vehicle options listed on their websites as well. I'll see if I can find some info later after work.

Budget have an OK-ish reputation over here. Are they pretty good Stateside?

Thanks, I’ll have a look too. Mostly the options thrown up are all standard vehicles though, although that’s probably due to my location.

I live in Nashville and a friend of mine rented a Challenger R/T from one of the airport rental places - Enterprise I believe.

No Europcar, you’re out of luck on that one. I remember you talking about this.

I know Hertz and Avis are sometimes sticky about renting out their higher end cars on one way rentals (usually they require a return to the same location). You might need to get a “standard” rental car (V6 mustang/Camaro or Charger would be probably doable) to get a one-way rental.

Great info, thanks. Is this fairly standard across the board, or would someone like Enterprise consider a one-way high spec rental?

I’ve used Enterprise a few times in Cananda before and was very happy with the service. They were very good about not pinning add-ons and extras to the price, can I expect the same in the US? Because ya know, Canada.

I’d imagine so. I know people who rent cars regularly, but I never had (the Europcar Vauxhall was actually my first ever), so it’s not really been my habit to ask about their various experiences. My dad used to rent cars once in a very long while through Hertz and did well, but I don’t think he’s done that since the 90s...

I’d say they’re all fairly equal here, to be honest.

I’m not sure as I usually rent from Hertz or Avis since Enterprise is usually a big hassle - it can sometimes (rarely) be done between big airports if they have inventory they need to move (e.g. between DC and New York, and Las Vegas and Los Angeles). But probably not from Nashville unless the stars align. If it’s not too spendy, a convertible is usually Mustang or Camaro, but generally a V6.

I honestly can’t say. I have rented from them once, hertz once, and enterprise once. All were the same experience, which was positive.

My rental was a manual, which is awesome, but I have no idea if that's common at all.

I’m up here in the Nashville area, and I would say that the Enterprise may offer better options for them. And the reps here in nashville deal with so many people coming into town for business for a couple days and flying back out they likely would not even bat an eye. Hertz may be your next best be, though. And then Penske.

Got insurance and a numbness to creature comforts that used to work but now I can’t be bothered to fix.

My dad loves the Scat-Pack! He looked at it and just said, ‘Yes. Definitely yes.’

Would you mind doing a bit of research for me later this year? As in finding a rental co that has two awesome chunks of Americana for hire to be taken up the Mississippi?
